Part of downtown Phoenix was closed on July 1, 2019, after a fatal fire at an underground APS power vault.

Ten days after an underground explosion in an Arizona Public Service vault, the Wells Fargo building is still running on backup generators for power. APS restored power, however, to all other buildings relying on the electrical grid impacted by the explosion.

Utility spokesperson Alan Bunnell said the corporate bank building will continue to operate on backup energy.

"It's going to take a little bit of time for us to repair that underground vault and put new equipment in there and get everybody back on what we call regular power," Bunnell said.

The power went out on June 30 when an electrical explosion in the underground APS vault ignited. Ricardo Castillo, a 12-year veteran of APS, died in the explosion and his colleague was injured.
