New Mexico’s Game and Fish Department said a duck at the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in southern New Mexico has tested positive for a highly virulent strain of bird flu.

It’s the latest case in a growing outbreak of bird flu, affecting poultry in several states. The H5N2 strain of the disease can be deadly among waterfowl, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers the risk to humans to be low.

The cinnamon teal duck from the wildlife refuge is the first to test positive in New Mexico. The duck was one of nearly 200 tested over the last two months as part of a federal effort to expand bird flu surveillance.

A wildlife specialist for the New Mexico Game and Fish Department is advising people to take precautions to protect domestic flocks, such as chickens kept for eggs in the back yard, from wild birds. Wildlife officials believe the duck that tested positive was likely passing through the state.

They said most migratory birds have left the refuge for their northern nesting areas.
