Arizona is one of 17 states that received shipments of anthrax in recent years, but health officials said the state is not at risk.

In 2006, a lab in Scottsdale was sent a sample of potentially live anthrax. That almost decade-old event has just come to light because of news that the Department of Defense recently sent the deadly substance to more than a dozen labs across the country.

In response, the federal government is providing more information about what other states have been put at risk and Arizona is one of them. But Dr. Bob England, director of the Maricopa County Department of Public Health, said there is no threat at this time.

“The lab does not even exist here anymore," said England. "No one was exposed back then and there’s no anthrax remaining in the state."

England said he just learned about the incident and could not provide the name of the lab or why it is no longer around.
