Valley residents have been dealing with more mosquitoes this year. County officials said complaints are around double years past.

Since January, the Maricopa County Environmental Services Department has recorded about 2,200 mosquito-related complaints. That’s up from the past several years when complaints filed stayed around 1,000.

Johnny Diloné is a spokesman with the department. He said much of the increase can be attributed to the area’s recent wet weather patterns.

"This is the time where we’ll be getting some storms and more water," said Diloné. "And there’s a potential of those numbers going even higher because of that."

According to the department, evidence of West Nile virus has been found in county mosquito traps, though no human cases have been reported this year.
