Off-road vehicle traffic and residential development in southwestern Arizona could lead to endangered species protection for the Yuman desert fringe-toed lizard.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced this week that it will begin a full status review of the reptile and seven other animals in the Southwest.

The move is in response to a 2012 request by Center for Biological Diversity to list the lizard.
