The University of Arizona College of Science lecture series is in its 11th year. This year’s theme is “Earth Transformed,” a look at global climate change.

The six-lecture series examines a scientific theme with UA and visiting researchers presenting hour-long lectures at 2,000-seat Centennial Hall. Often, crowds are diverted to a satellite viewing theater in a nearby classroom building.

This year, more than 700 UA students are experiencing the lectures in another classroom building, with a discussion period preceding the lecture and the lecturer visiting the auditorium after the event to answer questions.

Putting together the series takes months of planning and preparation and is accomplished with a university-community committee. The faculty chosen to give the lectures rehearse their presentations before their peers and the planning committee.

Arizona Science Desk reporter Sara Hammond takes a behind-the-scenes look at how this successful series comes together.
