Arizona Unemployment Rate Down In April

Arizona’s unemployment rate in April dropped to its lowest level in almost six years.

April’s unemployment rate stood at 6.9 percent – that’s a drop of four-tenths of a percent from March — the biggest month-over-month drop since September 1983.

The state Department of Administration says Arizona added 4,300 non-farm jobs last month — the majority of which were in the private sector.

Despite the good news, though, the agency notes the number of new jobs is lower than both the post-recession average for the month, as well as the ten-year average for April.

The leisure and hospitality sector added the most jobs last month – overall, eight of the eleven industries the state tracks added jobs in April; manufacturing, construction and trade, transportation and utilities were the exceptions.
