A judge has dismissed more than 1,000 lawsuits brought by Advocates for Individuals with Disabilities, or AID, against Valley businesses, says Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich’s office.

AID filed more than 1,700 lawsuits in 2016, mostly under Arizona’s version of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Following months of court battles, Brnovich’s office filed in December to dismiss more than 1,000 for lack of standing.

Brnovich has characterized the suits as frivolous, saying they “shake down” small businesses for thousands in damages and attorney’s fees for minor fixes. AID maintains that it defends civil rights in a state that fails to enforce full compliance with the law.

The attorney general plans to file a motion for sanction against AID.
