Arizona drivers certainly got a kick out of those unconventional safety messages dotting Valley freeways. So much so that the Arizona Department of Transportation launched a contest to let the public have a turn. ADOT received nearly 7,000 submissions, and now it’s time to vote.

“Single in HOV? Get a Real date. Not a Court Date.” That’s one of the 20 submissions the public can vote on.

Some of the entries are more direct when it comes to safety, while others are funnier.

Case in point, “That’s the Temperature, Not the Speed Limit.”

ADOT spokesperson Doug Pacey says the public response was so overwhelming, "we actually tweaked the rules in the middle of the contest in a good way. We went from 15 to 20 finalists and we went from one winner to two winners." he said.

And that’s good news for one of our own producers here at KJZZ, who, in the name of full disclosure, submitted a message and made the cut.
