The Pool Contractor bill repealing consumer protection regulations approached the final hurdles at the capitol this week.

If it makes it to the Governor’s desk, it will likely pass.

Gov. Doug Ducey and the Arizona Registrar of Contractors want the bill to pass to help streamline contractor and new business requirements.

But, pool contractors who testified against the bill as it worked its way through the legislative process reminded lawmakers the law was designed to protect homeowners from a series of fly-by-night pool contractors who were ripping off homeowners back in 2002.

At the time, con artists would require hefty deposits or full payment up front to build an in-ground pool worth more than $10,000. Once the homeowner paid the deposit, the builder never returned.

A House Committee takes up the bill Tuesday.
