Arizona’s first heat wave of the summer is warming up the Valley.

With a high temperature forecasted as high as 120-degrees this week, health officials are warning people that it might be best just to stay inside.

Dr. Beth Ranney with Fulton-Banner Hospital said that if you do have to go outdoors, pre-hydrate to keep yourself safe.

“If there’s nothing else you think about for the weekend, beside staying out of the heat, it’s just literally, if you have to go outside - please make sure you’re drinking a liter to a liter and a half, or more if you can before you head out there,” she said.

Ranney suggests that people also take precaution and start drinking four to six hours before you go outside.

And along with drinking plenty of water, Ranney said those susceptible to heat related illnesses should definitely stay indoors.

She said the heat will be even harder on kids and older people. And people who take certain medications are also more susceptible to heat related health issues.

“People that are on certain cardiovascular medications. Certain medicines that help slow down the heart. Or medicines for people with, um, increased blood pressure or diuretics medication,” Ranney said.

She said all those medications can put people at risk for dehydration faster.

And all people should be drinking a liter to a liter and half to avoid dehydration.
