Officials in Goodyear think giving up some money early will generate more cash later. The City Council recently approved new incentives for certain developers.

When asked what kind of businesses they want in Goodyear, residents most often say retail and entertainment venues. In hopes of attracting them — and generating sales tax revenue — the council approved the Goodyear Retail and Entertainmnet Development Impact Fee Reduction Program.

Businesses that are at least 5,500 square feet and designated for retail or entertainment can apply to have certain impact fees waived and reduced. Impact fees are one-time charges meant to recover the costs of things like streets, parks, police and fire services.

The two-year program is offered on a first come, first served basis and capped at $2 million.

The city created a Top 10 list of most desired retailers among residents:

1. Trader Joe’s

2. Whole Foods / Sprouts

3. Costco

4. Trendy concept restaurant

5. Trendy fast-casual restaurant

6. Top Golf

7. Bowling / game center

8. Upscale steak house

9. Chicago-based eateries

10. Familiar chain restaurant
