Arizona U.S. Sen. John McCain will stay in Washington, D.C., while he undergoes radiation and chemotherapy for his brain cancer.

A spokesperson with McCain's office confirmed he wants to "maintain a regular work schedule" while he oversees the Senate debate on the 2018 Defense Authorization bill.

On Monday, the Senate Armed Services Chairman blamed the recent rash of military accidents and unnecessary loss of soldiers on a growing sense of apathy toward defense spending.

"It is a problem caused by this mindless sequestration and a lack, frankly of appreciation of members of this body and the other one, of the needs of the men and women who are serving," he warned.

McCain did have praise for his own Senate Armed Services Committee, which unanimously went on to pass his bill.

Until it gains full passage, he plans to continue his cancer treatments at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland
