The Yellow-billed Cuckoo has been listed as threatened.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is going to reopen the comment period for its proposal to designate critical habitat for the western population of a bird listed as a threatened species.

A 60-day comment period expired Tuesday, and Fish and Wildlife decided to reopen the period right away.

The agency has proposed to designate more than 546,000 acres of critical habitat in 80 separate units in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, Texas, Utah and Wyoming for the yellow-billed cuckoo. It's currently listed as a threatened species.

The bird resides in 12 western states and in Mexico and Canada, but Arizona has the largest population.

There are between 350 and 495 pairs in the U.S. The bird spends winters in South America.
