The Phoenix City Council approved a 25-year deal to keep the Milwaukee Brewers spring training games in Maryvale.

While the city of Phoenix and the Phoenix Suns have been unable to reach a deal about the basketball team’s future downtown, the city has cut a deal with a professional baseball team.

On Wednesday, the council approved a contract to keep the Milwaukee Brewers spring training games in Maryvale for another 25 years. Phoenix will contribute $10 million toward park renovations over the next five years and the Brewers will spend between $41 and $63 million.

Bob Quinn, the team’s executive vice president, described the deal as the right balance between public and private investment.

“We’ve got a 20 year partnership with Phoenix. We’ve got a lot of equity in the area," Quinn said. "We’ve got a lot of equity with the city of Phoenix. We want to build on that and enhance the area and enhance our baseball operations.”

He said renovations will include a new concourse, concessions, retail, restrooms and a children’s’ play area. A new practice field that mimics the regular season home will also be created.

The team will take over park operations and maintenance, which costs the city $1.4 million annually. At the end of the 25 year term, the Brewers will have the option of buying the property at appraised value.

Council members Jim Waring and Kate Gallego were the only votes against the deal. Waring has been a long-time opponent of tax dollars supporting professional sports teams while Gallego cited the city’s budget challenges.
