Parents already beleaguered by kids badgering them for the latest iPad or remote control camera, have a perfect teaching moment at valley charities.

At St. Mary's Food Bank, for instance, Jerry Brown said they could use the help right now.

Forty-percent of the non-profit pantry's annual inventory is distributed through November and December.

"We have all kinds of openings for volunteering. You can pack boxes, deliver food to the homeless folks that need it,” Brown said.

At the halfway point of the holiday season, Brown said they still have thousands of boxes to fill.

“If you’re as young as 10 years old and want to not only help feed folks, and parents want to teach them life lessons about people who struggle all the time, come down, we have all kinds of openings for volunteering," Brown said.

It takes as little as an hour out of a day, Brown said, and parents must accompany minor volunteers.

There are also several dozen other valley organizations grateful to have children’s help whether it is with food boxes, park cleanup, wrapping toys, or creating art for hospitalized children.
