"Down Girl: The Logic of Misogyny" by Kate Manne

Time magazine’s 2017 Person of the Year is the women who have spoken out about sexual misconduct. The issue has resulted in the firings and resignations of powerful men in a number of fields, most prominently entertainment, media and politics.

In some cases, a common theme seems to be a lot of people heard about the allegations, but never did anything — often described as an “open secret.” But one philosophy professor has another word for the behavior.

The word is "himpathy" — a play on the word "sympathy."

Before we get to Cornell University Philosophy Professor Kate Manne’s take on "himpathy," KJZZ's Christina Estes asked her to define sexism and misogyny.

Manne started by talking about patriarchal social structures — certain areas where women play supportive, nurturing and subordinate roles.
