An Arizona river fish is no longer facing extinction thanks to conservation work by state and federal agencies.

According to Arizona Game and Fish, the humpback chub is named after the “fleshy hump behind its head.”

Within the next year, U.S. Fish and Wildlife will reclassify the fish from “endangered” to “threatened.”

Game and Fish says agencies including the National Park Service have been working to build up the wild population, which was once near extinction.

The Chub uses its hump back and large fins to position itself in the fast moving currents of the Colorado River.

The fish is found in Arizona below the Glen Canyon Dam.
