Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton.

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton officially resigned his post at noon Tuesday to focus on a run for Congress.

It will be a domino effect on Phoenix leadership. Vice Mayor Thelda Williams immediately takes over mayoral duties, temporarily.

Then the Phoenix City Council will appoint someone at a special meeting June 11 to serve officially until a special election.

Council members Kate Gallego and Daniel Valenzuela are already running for mayor. That means they’ll resign their seats by Aug. 8.

The remaining council members will choose replacements for Valenzuela and Gallego until another special election.
