Kathy Hoffman.

As we head toward Arizona’s August primary elections, KJZZ's The Show is inviting the candidates in contested races to talk about why they’re running and some of the key issues in their contests.

Democratic candidate Kathy Hoffman is running for superintendent of public instruction, hoping to replace incumbent Republican Diane Douglas as the state’s public schools chief. She is an educator who marched with tens of thousands of others in the #RedForEd teacher walkout this spring.

Hoffman works as a speech therapist in the Peoria Unified School District and has spent her career in our state’s public schools, having taught preschool in Tucson, and has experience in special education and bilingual education.

A first time candidate, Hoffman is facing Tempe Councilman David Schapira in the Democratic primary, but Hoffman said this is the year we’re seeing unconventional candidates, like her, winning elections.

EDITOR'S NOTE: This story has been modified to correct the spelling of David Schapira's name.
