The National Weather Service issued an excessive-heat watch over Phoenix for three straight days as temperatures soared past 110 degrees. 

More heat means more air conditioning, which strains electricity grids, and 4,500 west Phoenix residents were left without power for about three hours in the hottest part of the day on Tuesday.

Virginia Henninger, 76, says she came home to no power, but by keeping a blanket, tin foil and drapes over the windows all day, her house stayed at about 83 degrees. 

“It was on the warm side, but it wasn’t that bad," she said, "You could survive in it.” 

Phoenix officials urge residents to drink water and limit outdoor activity to avoid heat-related illness.
