Monday evening, a powerful monsoon storm swept through the Valley knocking over trees and taking out power lines.

While the city of Phoenix did not have any verified reports of localized flooding, it responded to 44 incidents of trees being damaged in the storm. Deputy Street Transportation Director Mark Glock says high winds were primarily responsible.

“It’s the aftermath of cleaning up with trees. We work with our forestry group, we cut up the trees, and we get them cut up and hauled off to the landfills,” said Glock.

The storms also caused major power outages across the Valley. SRP spokesman Scott Harrelson says as many as 41,000 SRP customers were affected at the height of the storm.

“This was a very significant storm." Harrelson said. "Lots of wind, widespread damage and, of course, thousands of outages.”

As many as 80,000 APS customers were also affected.
