Who doesn't love a good home renovation show?

If you’ve watched any HGTV recently, you know that a lot of what they do is tear down walls, creating the much-coveted “open floor plan.”

People often say they love that it allows them to cook dinner and watch their kids in the living room, things like that. And, today, open floor plans have become so ubiquitous that now there’s a parody on YouTube.

But, Kate Wagner, the author the architecture blog McMansion Hell, wants to end the tyranny of open concepts. That’s right, she’s making the case for rooms in a new piece for City Lab.

When The Show spoke with her, we started with the history of the open floor plan.
