Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich Monday took legal action against Purdue Pharma, the manufacturer of the prescription opioid painkiller OxyContin.

The filing in Pima County Superior Court alleges that Purdue engaged in deceptive and misleading marketing to push opioids, in violation of a prior court order dating back to 2007.

That prior ruling stated the drug manufacturer violated Arizona’s Consumer Fraud Act.

The new filing alleges Purdue violated that judgment by improperly marketing prescription opioids, including OxyContin, through seemingly-independent nonprofits.

Those organizations were allegedly paid millions of dollars to promote prescription opioids, even touting them as safer for treating pain than nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which include ibuprofen and aspirin.
