The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management has awarded more than $1 million to several entities across the state. The money will go toward keeping public lands healthy and reducing the risk of wildfire.

The $1.1 million will support several projects. That includes treating 200 acres of private land near Vernon in eastern Arizona and reducing diseased and dry vegetation on more than 100 acres of private land from Heber-Overgaard to Pinetop.

Spokeswoman Tiffany Davila said in total, about 750 acres of land will be cleared of hazardous vegetation.

“We just go in and clear and treat hazardous fuels," Davila said. "We take down some of the dead debris, the dead vegetation. We trim back and kind of thin out the areas and make it a defensible space zone to reduce the risk of wildfires in those areas.”

Seven agencies received funding, including the city of Flagstaff, Navajo County and the Prescott Fire Department.
