The Navajo Nation is allowing voters another chance to cast a ballot after many precincts ran out of ballots on Election Day. The late votes likely won't impact the election of new Tribal president Jonathan Nez.

The new votes will, however, be a factor in some close races for Navajo Nation Council representative.

The ballot shortage was traced to a two-part referendum that asked Navajos whether they wanted to increase the salary of top elected leaders. Tribal officials said voting machines rejected over-marked ballots, and second ballots were issued, which caused the shortage. Anyone who left their name at a polling site with no more ballots has a week to vote at one of a handful of election offices, starting Tuesday.

The tribe's election supervisors have announced the firing of elections director Edbert Little, saying the office needed, “a new direction.”
