What Mattis' Departure From The Defense Department Means For The Trump Administration

General James Mattis handed in his resignation to President Donald Trump on Thursday, not long after he and other Defense Department leaders learned — via a tweet — that the President was declaring victory over ISIS in Syria and all U.S. troops were coming home.

In heading the Defense Department, Mattis had been considered one of the steadier hands as it relates to U.S. foreign policy and assuring allies that the U.S. wouldn’t take any rash actions.
