Introduced Bill Would End Local Landlord Regulations In Arizona

A bill that would move oversight of rental agreements from the local to the state-level is being debated at the Arizona legislature Thursday.

The proposed bill states the regulation of rights, obligations and remedies between landlords and their tenants is a matter of statewide concern, and should not be regulated by a county, city or town.

The bill was proposed by House Rep. Gail Griffin, who also works as real estate broker. A lobbyist representing Manufactured Housing Communities told AZ Mirror the measure eliminates “patchwork” regulations.

Tempe Mayor Mark Mitchell is opposed to the bill, saying in a statement it would eliminate his city’s right to address the immediate needs of its residents. Tempe has much stricter housing codes than the state.
