A major winter storm swept through much of the state Wednesday, dumping plenty of snow across Arizona. While it wasn’t unusual for places like Flagstaff to get as much snow as it did, snow fell in places that typically don’t see that much white stuff.

The same weather system that dropped between 16 and 17 inches of snow in Flagstaff, also dumped snow in places like Cottonwood and Sedona in the Verde Valley. While a dusting or a few inches of snow isn’t unusual there, what happened Wednesday was. Cottonwood picked up five inches, while Sedona saw a little more than nine.

"It was a lot of snow for some of the lower elevations that don’t typically see it," said Cory Mottice with the National Weather Service in Flagstaff. "The Verde Valley area some of the residents that have been living there for over 20 years say it’s the most snow they’ve seen in that time."

Residents in other communities including Prescott, Payson, Show Low and Pine also woke up to a white New Year’s Day. Mottice said temperatures are expected to warm up in the coming week, so don’t expect the snow to stick around for too long.
