Northern Arizona University is experimenting with a new way to track parking. Cameras will scan license plates instead of using windshield stickers or paper tickets.

The “virtual parking” system is intended to reduce theft, counterfeit permits and the environmental impact of the stickers and paper tickets.

NAU parking lots will be the first to test the new system. Cameras connected to parking garage entrances and exits are expected to be put in place by 2020.
