Arizonans who make minimum wage will get a raise Wednesday. The state’s minimum wage goes up on New Year’s Day by a dime to $7.90 an hour. That is higher than the national one.

Arizona voters in 2006 authorized the state industrial commission to increase the minimum wage every year on Jan. 1, based on increases in the cost of living. Arizona is one of 13 states raising its minimum wage on New Year’s Day. Colorado, Oregon and Washington are among the others. California will raise its rate on July 1. Washington’s new minimum wage will be $9.32 an hour, and Oregon and California employers will also each pay at least $9 an hour.

The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. Twenty-one states will have minimum wages higher than that.
