Coconino County Detention Facility To Use High-Tech Wristbands To Track Inmates

The Coconino County Detention Facility near Flagstaff will soon track inmates using high-tech wristbands. Earlier this week, the County Supervisors approved the funds needed to deploy the system. Detention Lieutenant Thomas Hover said the wristbands will not only reduce paper waste, but will improve efficiency.

"Say an inmate is going from the housing unit they’re assigned to to the gym," Hover said. "Right now, that would involve the officer doing the actual movement, going back to the computer, logging it in the computer and then making sure it was logged by a second person in a log book."

According to Hover, the new tracking system will allow an officer to scan the inmate’s wristband, instantly updating his or her location. Hover said he expects the wristbands to be deployed in the next two or three weeks.
