More and more aircraft are being hit by ground lasers. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, more than 6,000 aircraft across the country have been targeted by the blinding beam of light.

Phoenix is no exception. The Valley ranks second when it comes to the number of reported laser strikes.

The number one spot goes to Los Angeles, but it’s close. Ian Gregor with the FAA said in L.A. there have been 232 reported laser strikes this year and 206 in Phoenix. Gregor said there are some common factor.

"With most of these places, the airports are located in urban areas, in densely populate urban areas. The planes fly over urban areas when arriving and departing from these airports, and in many of these places the weather is good so people are outside," said Gregor.

Gregor said while there have been no accidents, there are still plenty of dangers associated with laser strikes. It can distract a pilot or temporarily affect vision, forcing the pilot to abort a landing or hand-off control to the co-pilot. And in some cases, pilots have had to seek medical treatment for eye damage.

Unfortunately, catching those responsible isn’t easy.

"It can be hard to pinpoint the location of somebody shining a laser at an aircraft, but if any good news, anecdotally I seem to be seeing more people getting arrested, some police agencies have gotten quite good at catching people," said Gregor.

Earlier this week, four aircraft approaching Deer Valley Airport in north Phoenix were hit by green lasers. No arrests were made.
