Arizona Motor Vehicle Department Struggles With Long Wait Times

Arizona’s Motor Vehicle Division continues to struggle with getting customers in and out in less than half an hour. A new report by the agency finds that, on average, it takes close to 45 minutes for motorists to get what they need at offices in the Phoenix and Tucson areas. 

The MVD reports their field offices met the overall wait time goal with a 23-minute average in 2013 and 2014. But an Arizona auditor general’s report released earlier this year says those numbers don’t tell the whole story. The clock starts ticking not when a resident walks in the door but when they get a numbered ticket. 

According to the report, the ticketing system can be confusing and doesn’t necessarily serve people on a first-come, first-served basis.

The agency has hired a consultant to review processes, and he has found even though MVD staffing is down, but there isn’t a direct correlation between staffing and wait times.
