Gov. Brewer Signs New State Budget

Gov. Jan Brewer signed a new state budget into law Friday, for the fiscal year that starts July 1. But, she did use her line-item veto authority to cut some spending out of the $9.2 billion plan.

The governor cut a little more than $4.5 million, including money for alternative teacher development and to reimburse counties for the money they will lose because of a tax cut she also signed Friday. House Appropriations Committee Chair John Kavanagh does not think any of the vetoed items will cause great alarm.

"Clearly, there were a lot of small items cut that meant a lot to some, but in the overall context of a $9.2 billion budget, it was a light trim. I don’t think anyone’s gonna go away with bad feelings," Kavanagh said.

The House and Senate spent a few weeks wrangling over the final product, which spends less than the proposal the governor released in January.
