The Phoenix City Council has passed a measure extending the wait time for demolition permits for commercial buildings that are more than 50 years old.

Developers must now wait 30 days before bringing out the wrecking ball. In the past, it was just three days.

The measure was supported by historic preservation advocates who say Phoenix is losing too many of its old buildings to new developments.

City officials estimate about 300 permit requests could be impacted by the new policy each year.
