Last week, Gov. Doug Ducey welcomed Uber’s new fleet of 16 self-driving cars to Phoenix. While the governor is excited about the prospects of the autonomous vehicles on the road, Phoenix police are a bit more leery.

Sgt. Vince Lewis with the Phoenix Police Department said driverless cars are still so new that police don’t know what their impact on drivers and driver safety will be. 

“Now you’ve introduced these situations where you’ve got manned vehicles and unmanned vehicles,” Lewis said. “We will just have to take all variables into account.” 

Last year, Ducey signed an executive order requiring state agencies to support the testing and operation of self-driving vehicles. 

There are no laws in Arizona to prohibit manufacturers from testing the cars or even selling them to consumers
