Voters in Maricopa County won’t have to wait in lines during this year’s November election because most people will be mailing their ballots instead.

The all-mail election will only be for the smaller races in the county like those for school boards or fire districts. The jurisdictions holding these elections won’t be announced until later this year.

The Maricopa County Recorder’s Office says it decided to eliminate in-person voting because of problems with the technology in last year’s March special election, which led to long lines and even some instances of double voting.

“If every voter receives a ballot in the mail, we hope that improves turnout, but we are doing it out of necessity and cost savings,” Recorder’s Office spokeswoman Karen Loschiavo said.

Voters will get their ballots 27 days in advance and will have the option to mail or drop it off at one of the voting centers in the county.

State law doesn’t allow all-mail elections for countywide race, but Loschiavo says the Recorder's Office hopes that can change if this year’s election is successful.
