Increasing temperatures, low humidity and frequent high winds create a major wildfire threat each spring. The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department is looking to prevent that threat by enacting an open fire ban.

Effective Tuesday, open wood and charcoal fires are prohibited in Phoenix’s desert and mountain preserves, including Camelback Mountain, Papago Park, South Mountain and all areas surrounding Phoenix mountains.

Propane and gas grills can only be used in established picnic areas, and smoking is prohibited. Motorists who travel near or through desert or mountain preserves are encouraged to dispose of smoking materials only in their vehicle’s ashtray.

Residents living around preserves are also encouraged to remove dry shrubs and trim dead tree branches to decrease the risk of wildfires.
