It’s starting to feel like fall has arrived, at least a little bit. It’s the time of year I like to sit outside with a cup of tea and maybe a good book.

And if you’re looking for some local reads, you can discover new authors Saturday morning at the “Meet Your Literary Community” event at Phoenix Public Market. Jake Friedman with ASU’s Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing said there will be about 50 local authors at the market.

"We have people who will be doing spontaneous poetry. We have people who will be doing tarot card readings that are literary. There will be editorial consultations, we'll have writing prompts, there will be activities for kids," he said.

There’ll also be, of course, local Arizona authors, but Friedman said they won’t be big-name authors. Instead, the focus is on newer or lesser-known writers.

"We have a lot of individuals who are writing in different fields — some are self-published some are published with traditional authors," he said. "We also have a lot of local organizations that, you know, are just starting out. What we've tried to do here is sort of create a space for those grassroots groups because they usually have such, more of a difficult time reaching the public."

Friedman, who helped organize this meet-up, explained the idea is to create a space for Phoenix book-lovers to meet and discover the Phoenix literary scene.
