Here’s an Arizona Supreme Court decision you might have missed over the holiday. On Wednesday, the court ruled unanimously that anyone collecting signatures for citizen initiatives must appear before the court when they are subpoenaed.

Here’s why that matters — challengers to a citizen initiative can issue subpoenas for petition circulators they want to question, because they think the circulators are ineligible to circulate petitions or they think there was another issue with the way they gathered signatures. If those circulators don’t show up to court, all the signatures they gathered can be disqualified.
