Veterans groups, citizens and Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey will gather at the state Capitol to commemorate the 77th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

The Arizona Department of Veterans' Services is hosting the state's Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday at the Wesley Bolin memorial plaza just east of the state Capitol.

The event starts at 10:15 a.m. and the official program kicks off at 10:55 a.m. Arizona time. That's the moment, local time, when planes from a group of Japanese aircraft carriers launched their attack on the Pearl Harbor naval base and nearby military facilities.

Over 2,400 Americans were killed that day, including 1,177 on the USS Arizona.

The battleship exploded and sank after it was hit by two bombs. Most of the Arizona's fallen remain entombed in the ship, which lies at the bottom of the harbor.

Ducey says state flags will remain at half-staff between sunrise and sunset Friday.
