Some Valley school districts are facing budget cuts after voters defeated overrides in last month’s election. That’s on top of cuts to the schools made by the state over the past few years and a court ruling that found lawmakers have shorted schools on voter-approved money.

Tim Ogle, Executive Director of the Arizona School Boards Association, said when overrides fail budget cuts are next.

One of the districts whose override failed is the Saddle Mountain Unified School District in Tonopah, west of Phoenix. Mark Joraanstad, the district’s superintendent, said the override had been in place for nearly 30 years and would have provided $900,000 for career and technical education programs, fine arts and to keep class sizes small, among other things, at the district’s three schools.
